Guide to Our Orchestra
An immersive multi-angle and 360° experience placing audiences inside the orchestra pit.
Created for the Royal Opera House, Guide to Our Orchestra offers an intimate, behind-the-scenes view of an opera rehearsal. Using a combination of GoPro cameras mounted directly on orchestra members and a 360° rig positioned in the pit, we captured the orchestra rehearsing an overture under the baton of Music Director Antonio Pappano.
The experience allows users to explore the orchestra from multiple perspectives — seeing and hearing the instruments from a performer’s point of view. At any moment, audiences can select from multiple camera angles using an intuitive on-screen interface, switching between musicians and viewpoints while staying perfectly in sync with the rehearsal.
Built as a fully responsive web application, the experience adapts seamlessly across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices. It was also delivered as a standalone touchscreen kiosk app for on-site visitors. The platform was developed using WebGL, Marionette.js, and the YouTube Player API to ensure smooth, real-time playback across all devices.
Launched during the ROH’s season announcement in front of national press, Guide to Our Orchestra received widespread critical acclaim for its innovative and accessible approach to orchestral engagement.
