In Pursuit Of Repetitive Beats Multiplayer

A multi-sensory joyride into the heart of a working-class revolution in dance.

In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats is Location-Based (LBE) interactive virtual reality experience by award-winning filmmaker Darren Emerson, inviting audiences to go in search of an illegal rave, one night in Coventry in 1989. From poster-strewn bedrooms to pirate radio stations, police headquarters to secret warehouses, step-into the shoes of rave culture pioneers as you go in search of the party.

Using technology to create a truly collective experience, the multiplayer update to In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats enables groups of four people to share the same virtual space and interact together as rave culture pioneers. All Seeing Eye spent 8 months working closely with Darren and the East City Films team to evolve this already highly successful and critically acclaimed single-person masterpiece, into a multiplayer experience. Working on all aspects from avatar design to backend network design and implementation, to solving the unique challenges of interaction with physical objects in a VR experience

The experience is built using Unity Multiplayer and Netcode for Gameobjects to enable both local and remote play, which was paramount in co-locating during the development of the multiplayer version. Whilst retro-fitting the existing architecture proved an interesting challenge conceptually, the design of the existing single user experience was straightforward to adapt due to the modular scene orientated nature of the All Seeing Eye XR experience framework.

In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats was created by immersive artist Darren Emerson and produced by East City Films, with the original version funded by the BFI awarding National Lottery funding and Coventry City of Culture Trust. The tour is jointly supported by Arts Council England and BFI National Lottery Audience Projects Fund.

East City Films also received funding from Innovate UK, which is all about helping innovative ideas to flourish.
